INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT – USE OF DRONES IN PROMOTING AGRICULTURE IN GHANA

The use of new technology is vital to remain competitive in the global agribusiness sector. Farmers need to reduce crop costs and increase yield per square acre to remain competitive. New drone technology is at the cutting edge of the industry

There is the growing concern to address the ailing agricultural sector in Ghana with drone technology. Precision agriculture is a farming management concept that uses drones for agriculture to measure, observe, and respond to variability found in crops. From automated planting to crop management with real-time monitoring, drones have a vital role to play in the future of farming.

The agricultural industry is realizing the benefits and discovering different strategies on how drones can be beneficial in moving their crop production plans forward. This help smallholder farmers make key decisions and also assist big farms and their out-growers produce bumper yields for processing factories and school feeding systems.

The drones could be used for mapping of farmlands, plant health analysis, crop spraying, crop dusting and plant counting, etc. If Ghana could attain the food target by 2050 then the way to go from now is to adopt the drone technology. As organization we are looking for partnership this direction whereby partners could support with the provision of the machinery or equipment, training in the use of drone, assisting in promoting the technology in the country.
